faja's silence

My favorite essay was Faja by Maverick because it uniquely described the father on both a normal day and his uncommon. First, the essay described how the father usually acted on a normal day, which was busy. Maverick states that the father would come home from a long day at work and begin doing all the chores like dinner, paying bills and cleaning up the kitchen. Maverick goes into great detail about one particular day during this essay. During this day the father comes home and has nothing to do, his night is timeless. He sits in their screened in porch and just stares his military “million mile stare” as Maverick states. She describes the porch as “warm” and “filled with songs by Jimmy Buffet”. I like how she uses the description of the room to describe her father’s personality in a round-about-way. The father is described as a “machine” when he runs out of things to do during the day, which reminds me of my step-father, and makes me laugh in how ironically similar they are. Maverick starts to describe how lonely and sad the fathers stare become and the essay gets a little sad. At the end of the essay Maverick describes the stare the father has while on the ocean as “not lonely like the one before but, he’s at home”, making the essay interesting and have a good, happy ending. In the end, I picked this essay because of the great detail that he or she goes into describing the father using every type of literary element that she could. The details were so vivid I had an image of what the father looked like, which made the essay interesting and fun to read.
